Conroe Noon Lions: Bob Hataway speaks on his 52 years as a Lion

What have the Conroe Noon Lions been up to? Last week fourteen Lions conducted eye screenings for forty-two pre-school children at the Kids-R-Kids Child Center and Presbyterian Day School. As usual, these were free of charge to the children because our motto is “WE SERVE.” And we do it with joy in our hearts. And there's more to come....

Lions are planning on providing even more vision screenings for children on October 17th at the Family Wellness and Resource Fair at Sam Houston Elementary School. In the past, we have screened more than one hundred kids at this event--there is great need as you can see. We can't wait!

Another sweetheart project for the Lions is the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville for children with disabilities and their families. We load up the Camp each summer for several weeks where the volunteer Lions (and a lot of times their families) provide an outdoors experience for children who would not otherwise have one. Applications will be accepted at the camp or Lions office, just talk to any Lion to submit a child's name for next summer's camp.

This past week Bob Hataway spoke about how and why he joined Lions fifty-two years ago! Bob said he was looking for a way to serve our community with others and Lions seemed the way to go. To his surprise, his first major project was the Lions Club Carnival on the Courthouse Square. As a ‘rookie’ member he worked the “duck pond” all the children’s favorite event. A giant tub was brought into downtown Conroe filled with water and two hundred ducklings. When a child tossed a ring around a large swimming duck, he or she won a live duckling. A small problem developed when some parents began returning the “winnings” saying they couldn't take home a live duckling. Lion Bob says we gave away about three hundred ducklings even though we only started with two hundred. Believe it or not, it was so rewarding that he has served for more than fifty years! Bob says his membership has been a blessing to him as well as to the Club. Thank you for your service, Lion Bob!

Hear ye! Hear ye! This week starts our fall membership drive known as “The Amazing Race.” For the next few weeks of October, Lions will be recruiting new members to join in the fun. Contact our office if you are interested in joining, what we call, “the Greatest Lions Club in the World.”

Note my theme of fun, well week's meeting on Wednesday was full of it!  Occasionally our Membership Services Committee puts together what we call a “shake-it-up” and our theme was ‘Stupid Human Tricks’, where the members participated in a contest to bring out their hidden facts and talents.  Apparently, Lions don't have that much talent because two of the three winners were guests. First place went to guest, Tobin Redwine, when he showed his talent at playing the harmonica for us! Second place went to Ruben Hines who rubbed his stomach while patting his head and telling a very bad joke—so bad, I can't repeat! Third place went to long-time Lion, Rob Hamilton, when he swooned us with his version of Elvis Presley's “Love Me Tender.”

Can you become one of the stars of Lions? The Conroe Noon Lions Club meets on Wednesdays, at noon, at the Lone Star Convention Center. For more information about the Conroe Noon Lions Club, please visit our website, www.conroenoonlions.org, or call the club office at 936-760-1666.
