Globally Lions provide $1.4 billion worth of vision services and eyeglasses
This past week Conroe Noon Lions welcomed new members: Jamie Bell, LaVonne Christianson, Ethan Edwards, Mike Griffin, Harry Keyser, Dave Marsh, B. J. Spence, and Jason Smith. Past District Governor Mark Roth inducted these new members. PDG. Roth recalled the moment he became a real Lion-at-heart.
It was after hurricane Katrina had destroyed New Orleans and thousands of refugees made their way to Houston and other parts. When his Lions Club in Houston partnered with the University of Texas to help these refugees with medical issues, it was the Lions who performed eye exams and handed out refurbished eyeglasses. PDG Roth spoke to one man who told him that his glasses were left on his nightstand by his bed in New Orleans when he was rescued. The man said all he managed to save were the clothes he was currently wearing, and he hadn’t been able to see clearly until he put on those glasses, which came from our club’s Eyeglass Recycling Center. PDG Roth reminded us of the time Helen Keller challenged the Lions Clubs to become “Knights of the Blind” by taking up the cause of assisting people who have vision problems. Since her challenge, Lions around the world have provided more than $1.4 Billion worth of vision services and eyeglasses to those in need. We Serve!
Continuing with this service theme, Conroe Noon Lions will be holding yet another one of its many free vision screenings this Monday, from 1:00-3:00 p.m., at the Community Center in Conroe for people in our community who don’t have the means to have their eyes examined on their own. But that's not all we do. This past weekend we held our annual “kids on the lake” – fishing extravaganza where selected children from deserving families were treated to fishing, playing games, and having hamburgers and hot dogs at Owen Park in Conroe. What a great time was had by all—including the kids!
Did somebody say “reading, writing and 'rithmatic”? Well, reading at Reeves Elementary School is what the Conroe Noon Lions are doing this Wednesday, Sept. 17th. You haven't lived until you've read a story to a first-grade school class and listened to their input and responses. You never know what you're going to get; isn’t that what education is all about! Although I wonder who is learning the most?
Speaking of school, do you remember ever getting perfect attendance when you were growing up? Well, seventeen of our dedicated and loyal Lions have achieved perfect attendance at our weekly meetings and that's quite an accomplishment! Well done thou good and faithful Lions!
We have been joined again this Lions' year with our Community Partners who contribute to our charity allowing us to be God's hands and feet in this fantastic community. We reached nearly one hundred percent of our Community Partnership goal at the end of August. THANK YOU to all our Community Partners from the bottom of our heart. Their money will be put to its best use to uplift those people down on their luck and to give scholarships that encourage our local students to achieve their highest educational goals.
