This past Monday, May 19th the Lions participated in a vision screening with the Community Assistance Center. Thank you to all Lions who participated as we are bringing vision to our local area. We are also wrapping up our volunteer work with Reaves Elementary School with their Kindergarten Graduation. Lions prepared treat bags for the kids to celebrate their accomplishments of “bee-ing” a good student and completing the school year! The upcoming event to mark on your calendar will be the Year-End Banquet & Officer Installation which will be on Friday, June 20th at April Sound Country Club. Lion Tracey Irvine will be eager to be sworn in as President matching her husband Past President Charlie Irvine’s elite status in their household.
Gayle Cheatham brought a very informative presentation “Thrive Offline” to the club meeting today. Thrive Offline is a non-profit organization that is to bring awareness of these topics to our community. It is amazing to learn how social media affects our children and the multiple dangers with our children being exposed to cell phones. Unfortunately, all the days of the 1900’s of playing outside, taking photos with a film camera, and going to Blockbuster to rent videos are over. Can you believe that the average child will spend 5 hours + a day on screentime which will equate to 70 days or more a year! Did you know that the average child that has a smart device is now receiving only 4-6 hours of sleep a night when they need 10-12? These are just some statistics you do not truly realize until the numbers are presented.
Gayle explained exactly what makes social media addicting for children and how to also break the cycle with your own kids by having a screen free area in your home or time limits. Even though technology is great in some ways, such as efficiency from purchasing on Amazon, it is creating a whole new level of anxiety for our children.
