‘Kids on the lake’ is gaining momentum to be a fabulous day for area special kids and their parents as Lions make sure they have the best experience fishing, playing games, taking hayrides and enjoying all the hot dogs, hamburgers and cookies they can eat. There are still some teams needing more signups, but it will be a wonderful day for all.
Our Hometown Military Hero project is accepting nominations of local young people currently serving in the Military anywhere in the world. The selected “hero” will be showered with ‘Lion Love’ throughout the year so they know how appreciated and important they are to their grateful hometown Americans. The deadline for nominations is Sept. 30, so all are encouraged to make some soldier, sailor, marine or airman reminded of our support all year.
Keeping up the momentum, our annual Clay Shoot is coming up on October 3rd, our wonderful Community Partners will be sending teams for a terrific day of sport, great food, and recognition for superior marksmanship. Save the date and get ready for a terrific morning. We continue to help our area at the Community Assistance Center and will be conducting a Vision Screening on Sept. 21st. Lions are encouraged to participate in this rewarding service that truly changes lives.
Past President Warner Phelps introduced our guests and speaker, Ms. Karen Harrell of Lone Star Family Health Center. This organization operates several health clinics in our community in their mission to provide affordable healthcare while simultaneously preparing for tomorrow’s family medicine professionals. Ms. Harrell, a Certified Public Accountant, started as the director of Finance for Lone Star Family Health in 2012 and was promoted to Chief Financial Officer in 2013 and Chief Executive Officer in 2017. Among her many accomplishments, she is a recipient of the 2018 Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce Trailblazer Award. The center offers a full suite of Women’s Health Service, Behavioral Health, Dental Health, Imaging, Laboratory and nutrition to the community (87,000 visits last year) with special access for the economically challenged, especially kids under 18 and seniors over 64. But they serve all in-between too who are significantly challenged by access to care and also in need of culturally competent care in a variety of languages.
The HUGE event of the presentation is that for the first time, Lone Star Family Health Center will now be able to offer Vision services to a greatly underserved population. The new service is strongly supported by a grant of $100,000 from Conroe Noon Lions to set up this needed facility.
This is 100% in line with one of our Core Missions as Lions and that is SIGHT. The connection and support by our eyeglasses recycling center and vision screenings in the area will continue and enhance our community’s overall quality of life. Conroe Noon Lions are proud to make such a difference for so many in partnership with this organization.
