Our weekly luncheon on Wednesday, January 21st was lively with Lions happy to be together on a cold rainy day! If you aren’t part of this weekly gathering of fine folks, you are truly missing out! Being part of Conroe Noon Lions Club is not only a way to give back to the community, but also a way to build life-long friendships and a deeper sense of purpose. Two of our Community Partners were recognized this week: JDF Construction and IES Residential. Lions work side-by-side with these, and other Community Partners to ensure resources reach those who need them most.
Lions welcomed Angela Rucker, CISD Project Mentor Facilitator, and we heard from a panel of 4 mentors who participate in the program. Project Mentor connects community members with Conroe ISD students to foster meaningful relationships that promote positive youth development, helping students successfully navigate school and life. Mentors making up the panel were Pastor Alan Armstrong, our own Lion Bobby Brennan, Professor Jennifer Landers and Pastor Will Graves. All 4 of the panelists described the role in their one-on-one relationships with their students as benefiting themselves as much as benefiting their mentees. They described experiencing a powerful realization that simply showing up, listening, and believing in a student can make a difference. Several have had long-term connections with students from elementary school through
graduation and beyond. The writer of this article is also a mentor and is experiencing a rich and rewarding relationship meeting with a CISD 5th grader once a week.
