Greetings to all Lions and readers. Are you looking forward to some cooler weather and a fall garden? You know, Lions Club is like a garden. Lions cultivate, plant, and harvest through a variety of programs and events to deliver on our motto -“We Serve.” Student scholarships, Service Saturdays, Christmas Baskets, ‘kids on the lake,’ and Texas Lions Camp are just a few of the fruits of our work in the garden. Okay, on to the weekly news.
Lion Hannah Medley is requesting ideas for future Service Saturdays. The committee selects a monthly community service project to commit our talents and energy to. In the past we have worked in our eyeglass recycling center (ERC), packed food boxes, visited seniors, cleaned up, and built beds, lockers, and fences to name several. Recently we helped the teachers at Reaves Elementary ready their school for returning students.
 

Our meeting went off the rails when our president (Lion Tracy Irvine) and our three VP’s (Lions Sharene Carr, Jake Freeman, Andrew Perry) sashayed out in Richard Simmons attire and proceeded to shake, rattle and roll their body parts to dance music. Lions had never seen untanned hairiness such as this at a meeting… and of course I’m referencing Lions Andrew and Jake. Thank goodness it segwayed into Lion Sharene Carr’s announcement for Community Partners Month. This year’s theme is LEVEL UP. Our partnership program ensures the Conroe Noon Lions Club sustains our annual community service commitments and supports our fund-raising events - Clay Shoot, Lucky Derby, Dinner-Dance & Auction, and the Golf Tournament.  There are four levels of support and contributions are tax deductible.  Ask any Lion about your personal or business participation in our partners’ program.

‘Kids on the lake’ is just around the corner on Saturday, September 13.  Lion Ricky Morton is seeking volunteers AND participants. The fishing tournament is for children with special needs, ages 5-18.  Every cast is a win, and every catch comes with a cheering squad.  Fishing poles, lunch and fun activities are provided at no cost. Help us spread the word. Deadline for registering is September 10. The event runs from 9am to 1pm at Owen Park. Call the Club office at 936-760-1668 for more information.

Lion Pat Davis shared the Montgomery County Fair Association recognized the CNLC for thirty-five years participation as a fair buyer.  Club members contribute out-of-pocket for the annual fair auctions; no club funds are used.  Once again, our Lions answer the call to support youth.

Our program this past week was women’s self-defense. Officer Craig Favorat with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office presented the program. It was an eye-opener. Let me throw a few stats at you. Every 98 seconds an American is assaulted. Fifty-four percent are females aged 18 to 34. Seventy percent know their attackers. Rapists often test their victims through comments, inuendo, and inappropriate physical contact. Officer Favorat stated there are four “risks” of personal safety- awareness, reduction, recognition, and avoidance. MCSO offers a class on Women’s Self Defense for three days - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: four hours each day.  For more information, go to their website www.mctxsheriff.org.
