Club members have successful fundraiser, now on to the fair
Greetings to all Lions and readers. Glad to be back in the saddle again authoring this weekly article. Speaking of a saddle, allow me to segway into its FAIR AND RODEO time. Yeehaw! This past meeting Dr. Tobin Redwine gave us insight into the approaching Montgomery County Fair and Rodeo.
He is in his second year as the Executive Director for the organization. To say there is a lot to be involved in or to support is an understatement. Let me rattle off a few, livestock and non-livestock competitions, auctions, exhibitors, rodeos, fair queen, concerts, carnival, cook-off, and special theme days. More than 80,000 people will attend events during the fair’s run April 9-19. Anticipated auction sales will exceed 1.5 million dollars and youth are awarded $180,000 in scholarships. Hundreds of volunteers work hard to bring it all together for the youth and families through all the programs and events. For more information visit their website at mcfa.org.
On to Lion’s business. We had reports from multiple committee chairs and officers. Lion (1st VP) Sharene Carr gave a recap on our twentieth Annual Dinner/Dance & Auction with a theme of Travel, ROAR, Explore. Nearly 400 attended. Lions Amanda Anders, Sandy Apostolo, Connie Engle, and Royce Janik spearheaded the hustle for live and silent auction items, set-up and decorations. Lion Bill McGraw added $5,000 matching funds to the bead contest and Lion Steve Wohlschaeger purchased the VIP table. What a night!
Lion Connie Engle is recruiting Lions for the next Vision Screening on March 16 at the Community Assistance Center. Lion (2nd VP) Jake Freeman is seeking Lions for March 21st, Service Saturday. This month’s project is making kits for campers to build birdhouses at Texas Lions Camp. Lion Charlie Irvine announced the Fair Concession volunteer recruitment is underway. On behalf of Lion Charlie, he would rather you volunteer than be “voluntold.” The concession is all hands-on deck. So come on Lions sign-up early and often. Lion (3rd VP) Andrew Perry announced May 1-3 is the weekend for our Lions to prepare the Texas Lions Camp for a summer of fun for special needs children and families.
Perhaps the biggest spectacle this past week was the shenanigans promoted by Lion Steve W. as he announced our spring club membership drive - Battle of the Sexes. Lion Bobby Brennan sashed in dressed as a woman and Lion Warner Phelps energetically strolled in with boom box blaring and costumed as an oversized Rugrats character, bare midriff on full display and nearly blinding all present. Oh my! Lions, start making your list of potential members to invite to be a part of THE GREATEST LIONS CLUB IN THE WORLD.
As you can see, Conroe Noon Lions enjoy the camaraderie and fun while WE SERVE our community and beyond.
