Lions vision screenings help students succeed in school
Conroe Noon Lions are energized for our upcoming Community Partner Events and Community Service projects now that summer is retreating and a gorgeous Texas Autumn is upon us. President Tracy Irvine called the meeting to order and our pledges, songs and prayer to start the proceedings.
Led by past President Bobby Brennan, we sang Happy Birthday to “All Ya’ll” for our October birthday members and our “Smile” song. Lion Morgan Freeman asked us to let her video an ‘unbelievable” response as she is putting together another fantastic CNLC Video. President Irvine called our club incoming transfer Lion David Marsh to be awarded his Blue Badge. She then called our “Lions of the Month” Karl and Tammy Rushing to be recognized for their fabulous work organizing our support teams to Reaves Elementary preparing it for back to school.
We recognized our Community Partner of the Week Allcryo for their wonderful support. Past President Bryan Rennell urged any members who may know a currently Active-Duty Service Member to nominate him/her for our Hometown Hero program so we can honor them for the next year with lots of Lion love, respect and appreciation. Past President Jeff Cashner reminded everyone about the Clay Shoot as one of our premiere fund-raising events. Raffle tickets for great guns, generous donations of more fantastic firearms for Live Auction and all hands-on deck to make this the best sold out CNLC Clay Shoot. He gave a special shout out to Mark Carr, Color Interiors, Jeff Moon and Associates, Mark Curley with Tommy’s Painting and Body, Chase Pest Control, Bobby Brennan, First Financial, Bobby Finley, Finway Electric, Bill McGraw, Quality Home Products, George Wagner, First National Bank Conroe, Todd Yancey, Ricky Morton, Conroe Welding Supply, and IGY6 the distributor of our guns for auction.
Lion Shelia Thomas reported on the kickoff of our annual Preschool Vision Screenings. These early interventions change lives for the better by identifying nearly 10% of our screened kids as needing referral for corrective vision to succeed in school. We need more volunteers for this program and signup on-line is simple and easy. Lion Hannah Medley reported that our October Service Saturday will be a Vision Screening on the 18th at Houston Elementary from 9 to 1. There will be a lot of kids and help is certainly needed.
“Program Chair for Life” Past President Mike Sproba introduced our speaker Mr. Jesse Carver with the Livestock Marketing Association. They are the National Trade Association for the Livestock Marketing businesses, with over 800 members nationwide. They do legislative engagement on behalf of the industry and serve as representatives to the regulatory agencies that oversee all aspects of the livestock industry. Today’s presentation will focus on the Beef Cattle Industry. Currently the demand is very high, not only in the USA but worldwide. The population of producing beef cows is low due to market, weather and economic factors of recent years. Additionally, the value of land as traditional beef ranchers hand their ranches to the next generation is such that land value for development outstrips the economics of continued cattle ranching. While great progress has been made in genetics and management to meet the need for quality USA Beef, the demand is what is driving todays’ prices for the great steak we all enjoy.
President Irvine thanked Mr. Carver and adjourned the meeting at 1:00.
